SOH - First half, we were very very panicky when we got on the ball, we literally reverted to the old days of trying to lump it forwards for Antonio to get onto, the passing was shit and just looked like a rabbit in the headlights.

When we had some sustained pressure, they looked brittle. As much as the manager I'm sure at half time would have been quite pleased at how things were going in a sense we weren't losing I'm sure he'd have said to go have a go.

Agreed but thought we were in better form now than then. We got done anyway we might as well tried to win the game.

Adrian Durham summed it up. Beaten before we crossed the line.

If you remember we've been torn a new one quite few times at home this season but come out with the result, Liverpool are better than all those teams that did this even weakened as the players we feared were in the main playing for them.

Let's just say we are now better set up to play Liverpool away.

Not saying we don't, you just highlighted 1 old player but didn't mention anything about those I mentioned.

Agree, we did play with fear. Very odd considering our run of form and their injuries.

We've got good players! We played with fear

For every James Milner, you have Thiago, Wijnaldum, Shaqiri and Salah, axeman son.

Honestly cant believe how our fans surrender! Last week i was reading Soucek and rice worth a couple of hundred million, how brilliant fornals and bowen are and we got the run around with a midfield including a 35 year old milner. There was loads of space in behind Thiago if we had turned him and got going the other way. We bottled it on the day as they all but said on the tele.
Our shit tactics of launching the ball at every opportunity didn't give us a chance. Just constantly gave up possession. A very Allardyce like display.

I said last week the arrival of Lingard would have a negative effect on the team, and look what's already happened. We've played woefully lost our first game in ages as soon as he's got here, and he's not even set foot on the pitch yet!

;)

(Fully expecting a few hostile replies to this before people have read it properly!)

Sir Alf, where it will fuck up further is not being able to retain our best players....in recent years we've had one or two outstanding players at best now we have quite a few on the bigger clubs lists of targets. We will forever be treading water with these cunts owning us.

In the case of Moyes, I think what happens when we lose is that natural thing humans do where what they call "confirmation bias", "unconscious bias" or on here outright "conscious bias" kicks in :-) He did not do perfectly but there is little he did wrong in terms of set up and IMO tactics too. He clearly wanted to avoid getting done on the counter and conceding early although in the end all it did was allowed us to stay in the game for 60 mins.

IMHO, the match up to Liverpool and especially in midfield exposed our squad and team limitations. They did not let us play because we literally unable to get the ball off them as a midfield unit and retain it when put under the high press. Some of our players could not pass it accurately when closed down quickly. They unnerved us. Perhaps in the mind ( the giving too much respect thing or in awe of their reputation and achievements ) or just we are not very good when pressed quickly. I think more the latter.

But in hindsight the formation match up did not help either with their diamond and Salah and Origi dropping back into midfield, totally suffocating our central 2 of Rice and Soucek. Bowen and Fornals were out wide and covering their wing backs or trying too and Benrahma was floating. But like I say, our 5 collectively did not have the pace, movement or physical strength and athleticism. They dominated. These issues led to us losing possession so easily when we tried to move forward and the tactic of the ball over their high line to Antonio failed too as they had both the pace and physical strength in their back line to cope most of the game.

We did not perform because they did not let us. The need for a better squad is all this revealed but it will not happen overnight. Assuming the owners hang on and we do not get a rich buyer (s) we will have Moyes for a while. With GSB's finances now on the slide, Moyes is a probably the best fit we could have ( again IMO). He needs 3 - 5 years, maybe a more to get us up and near the top 6 on a regular basis but with the meagre budgets he will have he is going to have to develop a lot of players. Top 4 no way going to happen with GSB.

We have 1 striker and 2 central defensive midfielders of quality in the squad, no quality left back ( Cresswell in that role cruelly exposed yesterday for 2 goals ). As someone said yesterday, we need 5 high quality players with the correct mind set and fit for the team ethic.

So recruitment is once again going to be key. Lets hope we continue with the current trend since Moyes has been back with good players with good attitudes.

Yes, mate.

To be fair, I thought Henderson, particularly, and the young beardy bloke did bloody well, the few times we asked any questions of them. Henderson won 100% of his duels.

So much for the weakened CB situation.

I think people are being harsh on Moyes but on here that doesn't surprise me. We're 5th in the league for fuck sake so he's obviously doing something right.

I thought the main difference between us and them was the fact that they had a hundred million pound striker and we've got a manager that's perfect for owners with short arms and long pockets.

In both spells as manager Moyes has taken a winger and converted him into a striker. The bloke deserves a medal but he's obviously not good enough for some of you football geniuses.

I think they saw the team sheet and thought they just needed to turn up a bit like many of our fans and then when they didn’t touch the ball for the first 10mins we couldn’t change the pattern of the game
They are a brilliant side but they definitely had weakness’s out there but we were to scared to try and exploit them we simply needed to move 10/20 yards up the pitch
Moyes is doing a great job and anybody who says different just doesn’t want to admit they got it wrong but yesterday you saw the difference between him and an elite manager who let’s be fair has better players but even with Henderson and the other kid who barely ever played still pressed and still kept a high line against a centre forward who is far quicker than any of his defenders and who was bang in form.
Also on another note if anybody is still in doubt why we got Lingard in after seeing our two wide players disappear for most of the game and then Yarmalenko lumbering around for however long he was on for we really could of done with somebody to come off the bench who could actually have a positive affect on the game

Yes if he had gone down there would have been a ‘debate’ about that.
Refreshing to see however the game played without the amount of cheating fans are subjected to.
It’ll be different on Wednesday though. Grealish will ‘go over’ ten times at least and his comrades are not far behind him.
Expect 40 dives from them.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Liverpool - Official Match Thread FT 1-3
A small point, though all academic now, was Antonio being blatantly tugged back in the first half where otherwise he would have been clean away on goal, with no chance of being caught. I admire his honesty in not doing a Salah and flinging himself to the floor, (probably one reason why we've had no penalties, honesty), but if he had, shouldn't that have been a red card, if the rules are followed correctly?

The pundits on norwegian TV didn't mention it at all, even though there weren't many big incidents in the first half. There wasn't even a replay at all staight after.

Moyes has got to manage the hype that is building AND the fact he has to grow the team/squad as and when they will let him.

Don't start on the manager when it's clear the owners don't make strides to get into Europe they don't want the extra games.

All Moyes can do or any manager willing to put up with their shit running of the club is tow the line and point out how far we always are off the pace.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v Liverpool - Official Match Thread FT 1-3
Like many on here, I thought we lacked our usual tempo and physicality yesterday.

It has been a hectic festive and post-festive period, with games coming thick and fast. That, the fact that we were playing one of the best club sides in Europe and the bookings which made both Rice and Soucek tentative, probably swung it.

We've come a long way this season. But yesterday showed we have to be 100% on our best game to compete with the very best sides. We fell short of that yesterday. No shame in that - providing we genuinely learn from it (rather than just give the usual guff about trying to learn from it) and improve.

I think our lack of out-and-out striking options is going to haunt us unless one of the kids (Odubeko or Afolayan) steps up: and that's a lot to ask.

What I want to see now is that Moyes and the players take on board how Liverpool stepped up a gear in the second half - and plan for that in the Cup game against Man Utd. We're away at Old Trafford, but we've got a genuine chance in that game providing that we are 100% on it from the kick-off. No dip, like we had in the first 20 mins of the second half yesterday.

It's fucking relentless at the top!

Didn't see his pre match comments, not what you want to hear. In terms of our reluctance to commit to attacking them from the off I'd say we were worried of them hitting us quickly on the break like they did for 2nd goal.

"Moyes pre match comments about watching yids and Liverpool and stating west Ham are far away from those teams in terms of quality was bizarre in the extreme"

Yeah I thought it was strange too. Not really what I wanted to hear just before the game.
